This article is concerned with the washback effect of
language proficiency testing on the language education
process. Specifically, after a literature review of the
phenomenon, the different kinds of washback effect from
language proficiency testing are critically presented
and theoretical models presented by scholars who have
done work in this field are discussed. Furthermore,
essential related research is recorded as well as the
research findings and results. Finally, guidelines are
provided for those who wish to investigate the washback
of particular testing systems and high stakes exams.
