The Language and Asylum Research Group (LARG) announced the launch of LARG's website: http://www.essex.ac.uk/larg. LARG is a group of experts who share an interest in LADO (Language Analysis for the Determination of Origin) as a research topic, from a practitioner's point of view, or both.
On LARG's website you will be able to read about language analysis in asylum cases, keep up with research-in-progress, already published research, relevant legal decisions, and much more.
Applications for LARG membership are welcome from academics, practitioners, lawyers, qualified linguists, government representatives, NGOs, and anyone else with an interest in responsible, valid and scholarly practices in LADO.

The Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI) of the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-track position in measurement and evaluation with a specialization in second/foreign language assessment, commencing on July 1, 2012. This position may be filled at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor depending on qualification and experience and may also be complemented by an internal University Research Chair in Bilingualism. The special issue of Language Learning & Technology (Theme: Technology and the Less Commonly Taught Languages) will focus on the role played by educational technologies in the learning and teaching of LCTLs (i.e., languages other than the traditionally taught Western European languages such as English, French, German, and Spanish), such as Arabic, Farsi, Pashto, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Hindi, Korean, Indonesian, Tagalog, Thai, Turkish, Vietnamese, Swahili, Yoruba, and other languages critically important to US national interests. Individuals and organisations with relevant experience are invited to apply for funding to undertake applied research projects in relation to English language testing, specifically IELTS related, to be carried out in 2012. Funding of up to AUD$36,000 per research project is awarded to a selected number of proposals each year. This year IELTS encourages applications to undertake research studies which fit within these broad areas:
• Test development and validation issues
• Issues relating to contexts of test use
• Issues of test impact
Applications must be submitted online at www.idp.com/ielts/grants2011 by 30 June 2011.

ALTE has announced that the revised version of the Manual for Language Test Development and Examining - for use with the CEFR is now available on the Council of Europe website: http://www.coe.int/T/DG4/Linguistic/ManualtLangageTest-Alte2011_EN.pdf
ALTE was commissioned to prepare this revised version of the Manual by the Language Policy Division of the Council of Europe and representatives of many ALTE Members and Affiliates, particularly members of the ALTE CEFR/Manual Special Interest Group and their colleagues, contributed to the revision by supplying materials and reviewing draft texts at various stages in the process. The Manual is a useful addition to the ‘toolkit’, which offers support to assessment providers and other practitioners with an interest in language testing in the use of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
